Medium and Heavy Duty application currently accounted in 2008 for 26 % of the fuel consumed for transportation activities in the U.S. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 will lead to regulations at the vehicle level. Due to the diversity of applications and the lack of vehicle dynamometer testing facilities, other processes shall be used to evaluate fuel consumption. The presentation describes the different steps of Model Based Design and how the processes could be used. In addition, examples are provided regarding selection of processes as well as the requirements of any vehicle simulation tool that would be used to support regulations. Watch the video

One solution in reducing carbon footprint is via the electrification of the transportation sector. It is this emphasis of electrification that is driving the need for higher energy and power density batteries for storing energy whether for traction drive or handling auxiliary loads. With these higher energy and power storage devices comes new technology challenges which must be addressed. These new challenges, along with maintaining the past and present battery technology standards, is the essence of this newly formed Battery Standards Committee. Watch the video

Motors for Automotive Electrification: A GM Perspective, Pete Savagian

With increased vehicle electrification, the importance of electric traction motors is increased, as more or all of the energy used to propel the vehicle pass electric power now passes through the electric traction motor. For such vehicles, like E-REVs and BEVs, vehicle range and efficiency are now directly proportional to electric motor efficiency when running on electric power alone. Thermal demands are much higher as the entire vehicle's traction power must pass through the motor. This need for high efficiency and high thermal duty is a departure from much lower thermal-duty HEV "peak-shaving" applications and this calls for the application of new motor technologies. We discuss one such technology of specialized motor stator construction that significantly improves motor efficiency and motor thermal duty necessary for all-electric driving. Watch the video

Nissan has conducted studies of various RWD hybrid configurations, examining acceleration performance, fuel consumption reduction potential, packaging, towing performance and cost. A One-Motor Two-Clutch [1M2C] architecture provides favorable balance among these criteria. Further, the 1M2C system adapts well to FWD applications with smaller engine sizes, which expands the opportunity for potential production volumes. Implementation of this system requires an integrated control system to regulate battery, inverter, motor, clutches, engine, and transmission simultaneously. System operation will be described and demonstrated in fleet test vehicles. Watch the video

Hybrid Vehicle Comparison Testing Using Ultracapacitor vs. Battery Energy Storage, Jeffrey Gonder

General Motors Corp. (GM) funded the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to retrofit ultracapacitors onto a GM hybrid vehicle and compare the retrofitted vehicles performance to that of the production vehicle using nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. The project grew out of analysis NREL performed for the United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC) suggesting that a hybrid vehicle can achieve significant fuel savings with a high power but low energy on-board storage system. Ultracapacitors could satisfy such a storage system description and bring potential benefits such as long cycle and calendar life, good low-temperature performance and low long-term projected costs. The platform chosen for the conversion project was the Saturn Vue belt alternator starter (BAS) hybrid, which has a 25% higher window sticker fuel economy than its conventional counterpart. The presentation will explain how the retrofit was carried out on this platform, and summarize the results of both bench-top and vehicle testing. The vehicle testing took place using the stock as well as one and two ultracapacitor module configurations, both on-road and in a climate-controlled chassis dynamometer test cell. With respect to both fuel economy and acceleration performance, the ultracapacitor HEV configuration performed at least as well as the production battery-supported HEV. Watch the video

PHEV MPG: Standard Test Results versus Expectations of Real-World Results, Mike Duoba

The objective for standardized dynamometer testing is to provide a sound basis for comparisons among vehicles with varied vehicle designs. However, in the case of PHEVs, observed fuel economy may dramatically depart from results obtained in standard test practices depending upon driving style and accessory usage. In this presentation, expectations of standard PHEV MPG results will be shown and a discussion of how much these numbers may change when in-use behavior is considered. Results of on-road data and off-cycle dynamometer results will be shown from prototype PHEVs to illustrate the issue. Watch the video

The supply side influences on the development and sales of HEVs and PHEVs such as CAFE, and ZEV are well known, the supply side influences less so. This presentation gives the consumer perspective on HEVs and PHEVs what do consumers see as the strengths and weaknesses of the electrification of the fleet and what can the industry do to mitigate consumer risk. Watch the video

Consumer Response to HEVs and PHEVs, Ken Kurani

At the 2009 SAE Hybrid Symposium results were presented from several phases of a multi-year, multi-study market research agenda on hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) at UC Davis. That agenda continues to be fulfilled, and at the 2010 Symposium the analysis of consumer markets will be updated and put into a new context especially as the UC Davis household PHEV demonstration project has progressed from a few participants last year to over 70 households who have now driven a converted Prius for four to six weeks. The discussion will highlight recharging behaviors, prospective PHEV designs created by respondents, the importance of social networks in the spread of information and the creation of respondents valuations of PHEVs, and the effects of feedback to drivers on their driving and recharging. Using the extensive and repeated contacts researchers have with participating households, we are able to retell their experience in the form of narrativesliterally, a story of what these households encounter with a new technology. Watch the video
