The standard SAE J1711 Recommended Practice for Measuring the Exhaust Emissions and Fuel Economy of Hybrid-Electric Vehicles was first balloted in 1999 (Hybrid electric vehicles have been mass produced for sale in the USA since 2000). The procedure expired in 2004 and a new task force was assembled in 2006 to update the procedure to address announced "plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)" planned for sale in 2010. PHEVs were addressed in the original procedure but current consensus opinions of testing and reporting the two sources of energy consumed in testing have evolved since the mid 1990's.The procedure concept is now finished and the document is currently being edited to reflect these changes. The presentation will address test sequencing and treating of the test results with examples from prototypes tested at Argonne National Laboratory.
